Hans Otto Theater GmbH

This new theatre in Potsdam opened September 22 – 24, 2006, with five premieres and several other accompanying events took place.

The new Hans Otto Theater can be found on the cultural and commercial location Shipbuilder’s Lane, directly on the waterside of Lake Tiefer See. It was devised by the well known Cologne architect Prof. Gottfried Böhm. Characteristic for the entire building is the shell-shaped roofing of the auditorium and foyer which opens toward the water. The vitrified foyer offers a particularly fantastic view over the Lake Tiefer See to Park Babelsberg. A dock in front of the theatre makes it possible to arrive by boat. The auditorium offers room for up to 485 visitors. The seats can be as lowered and raised. Integrated into the modern building is an old gasometer, a building under historic renovation, and the tower of the former Chicory Mill deriving from the 19th century, where you can find a top italian restaurant.

The Hans Otto Theater is the theater of the regional capital Potsdam and offers a manifold repertoire. There are plays as well as a children’s and youth theater. You can also find music theater events, usually as guest performances.

Uwe Eric Laufenberg has been the manager since September 2004. His repertoire-motto “Unterwegs” (On the way) has been very successful during the last two terms.

The Hans Otto Theater also performs in other places. Riding Hall A is used for the children’s and youth theatre. The Historical Château Theater takes place in the New Palais Potsdam-Sanssouci, and - as a summer theater sequence - in the Orangery Sanssouci.

Current re-stagings are also planned in Palais Lichtenau and in the Fachhochschule Potsdam near Alter Markt.
